What types of therapy do you prefer to use? I use Rogerian techniques, client-based

Queer issues
What is your understanding of transgender/transsexual and the issues revolving around it? Transgender people experience incongruity. Their inner selves and biological bodies are not in sync. There is a broad spectrum of choices that these individuals have in addressing this paradox. I recognize all points on the spectrum as valid.
What kind of experience have you had with transgender patients? I have had transgender clients for the entirety of my practice. I have helped many people work on the emotional aspects of being transgender. I have made many recommendations for hormones and surgeries.
What experience do you have with queer patients? I have extensive experience with queer patients.
Are you able to prescribe hormones and medications? What criteria do you require? No, I do not have prescriptive authority.
Are you willing to write letters for hormones and/or surgery? What criteria do you require? Yes. I have a checklist of areas that I need to discuss with the client before considering recommendation for hormones or surgery. I require that the client come a minimum of 6 times before approval for hormones, and I need to see someone for a year before recommending surgery. Simply coming to the appointments and paying for them does not ensure that you will be recommended for hormones or surgery. I will tell you early on if I do not think that you fit the psychological criteria for recommendation.

I only work with clients who respect the professional responsibility that is presented to me in approving someone for hormone therapy or surgery.

I AM UNWILLING TO WORK WITH CLIENTS WHO DO NOT SEE THE VALUE IN PSYCHOTHERAPY AS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT TO BEGINNING HORMONE THERAPY.

Do you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc? (Optional) Yes. I am a lesbian.

General

What subjects do you specialize in or work with? I specialize in addiction and anxiety disorders.
Are you willing to work with other mental health or medical professionals a patient has worked with? Yes, if a release is signed.
Are you willing to meet with family or partners? Yes, if the client requests it.

Payment
What insurance companies do you work with? I know I can take Crime Victims' Compensation. I may be able to take Primera and a few others, it all depends.
How much do you charge? Is it a sliding scale? My basic fee is $75 for 50 minutes and I slide down from there. I try not to go lower than $45.

Education and Credentials
What is your training? What qualifications do you hold? I have a Masters Degree in Couselling Psychology from St. Martins and a Bachelors from Evergreen.
How long have you been practicing? I graduated from St. Martins in 1993 and have been practicing ever since.
Are you a member of any professional organizations? Washington Mental Health Counselors Association, American Mental Health Counselors Association, and GoodTherapy.org.
What types of therapy do you prefer to use? I'm pretty eclectic. I basically do talk therapy. I encourage people to do journaling and I can offer homework assignments. I try to use myself as a tool to help people figure things out for themselves.

Queer issues
What is your understanding of transgender/transsexual and the issues revolving around it? I think it's a pretty broad term. It's when your body doesn't match your spirit and your personality. I hate using the term "wrong body" because I don't think the body is wrong. Just, the gender doesn't match the genitalia. My thing is supporting people where ever they are to figure that out and also dealing with a society that is pretty fucked up. Generally, I think it is very natural. Transphobia pisses me off.
What kind of experience have you had with transgender patients? I've written a letter for transgender surgery only once, but I have other clients who are dealing with gender issues. Outside of of my official counseling position, I've done support for many trans people.
What experience do you have with queer patients? I deal a lot with queer clients, but not only.
Are you willing to write letters for hormones and/or surgery? What criteria do you require? I am absolutely willing. I would have to research it again, but I am willing to do so. I don't have any specific criteria, but I would have to feel comfortable knowing that the person is ready for what they are asking me to write a letter for. I wouldn't have a problem saying 'no' or 'let's wait' but I pretty much trust people. I wouldn't do it after only one or two sessions, I need to feel like I have a solid relationship.
Do you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc? My partner is bisexual and I have a history of working with the lgbt community, but I myself identify as straight. I don't consider that the 'norm,' but it's what I am.

General
What subjects do you specialize in or work with? Hate crime victims, suicide and depresssion (situational not physical/biochemical), life changes of all kinds, I work a lot with teens and parents, couples counseling. All ages, except for small children.
Are you willing to work with other mental health or medical professionals a patient has worked with? Absolutely. I have to have release forms completed, but I have those.
Are you willing to meet with family or partners? A client can invite people in as their guests during their session or we can do couples therapy, but I will not see partners as individuals.
Do you work with any organizations outside of the mental health field? PFLAG, Families United Against Hate, Safe Schools Coalition, Youth Guardian Services.

Silvia's profile with Good Therapy

Payment
What insurance companies do you work with? I do not work with insurance companies
How much do you charge? Is it a sliding scale? I charge $120 an hour with a cash payment discount. There is a sliding scale available. Payment plans are negotiable.

Education and Credentials
What is your training? What qualifications do you hold? I hold a Masters of Divinity Degree and Doctor of Ministry Degree, as well as completing 1200 hours of supervised clinical work in hospital settings. I was a minister in a large church for 12 years.
How long have you been practicing? I have been practicing for over 17 years, the majority of those years were in the parish setting where I dealt with issues ranging from life to death, sexuality, loss, grief, glbtq and all the issues human beings face in the life journey.
Are you a member of any professional organizations? Yes, the most relevant organization for my work as a counselor is Good Therapy, an association of therapists and counselors who believe in a non-pathological approach to human beings.
What types of therapy do you prefer to use? My work is based on the understanding that we are not problems to be fixed, but mysteries to be embraced as Parker Palmer says. My work is informed by the tenets of self-psychology, Rogerian (unconditional positive regard), art therapy, and soul work. I understand all work to be soul work, as we all long to become whole human beings.

Queer issues
What is your understanding of transgender/transsexual and the issues revolving around it? I understand that transgender/transsexual issues are complex and multi-layered, affected by the culture, society and religious worldviews that render transpeople invisible while also making it very dangerous to be seen. I understand how sex (physical presentation), gender roles (socially contructed), gender identification (self-identification) and sexuality interact with one another in unique ways for each individual.
What kind of experience have you had with transgender patients? In my parish work, I have been an educator, advocate and companion to transitioning people and their families. In my personal life, I am married to a transgender partner.
What experience do you have with queer patients? As my counseling is based on soul work, I see all clients as whole human beings. Descriptions of gender identity seem to be a necessaru response to the world which negates a client's own experience of themselves. I work to allow the soul to express itself in a congruent way.
Are you willing to write letters for hormones and/or surgery? What criteria do you require? I am willing to write letters, however, I can only write them in the capacity of a clergy person.
Do you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc? I do not identify myself in any category because I understand them to be fluid and complex. I believe that my own identity as a whole human being allows me to treat clients with the greatest respect and dignity that we all deserve.

General
What subjects do you specialize in or work with? I work with soul and gender, soul and role, and how to incorporate the soul into our roles in the world. Art is a big component of my understanding of how we can come to wholeness.
Are you willing to work with other mental health or medical professionals a patient has worked with? Always.
Are you willing to meet with family or partners? Always.
